Hardwood flooring or engineered wood flooring: what should we choose?
Wood flooring has a classic look that never becomes old-fashioned and adds home an atmosphere of warmth and privacy. Currently, wood flooring is found in two main types:
- Hardwood flooring;
- Engineered wood flooring.
Hardwood flooring is made from a single piece of solid wood. Because of its thickness, hardwood flooring can be sanded and refinished over several generations. Also, hardwood flooring expands and contracts depending on the humidity changes in your home. Therefore, to counter this movement when assembling, a space is left between walls and flooring that is masked by a plinth.
Engineered wood flooring is manufactured from three to five layers of solid wood. Each layer is added above the other by pressing at heat with non-toxic adhesives. Therefore, it is less likely that engineered wood flooring be affected by changes in the humidity of your home, regardless the level where it is installed.
The choice between the two types of flooring is made taking into account:
- The level where it is installed: ground, level or basement
Hardwood flooring is not recommended to be installed at the basement due to moisture problems that may occur. Engineered wood flooring can be installed successfully at any level, including into the bathrooms where moisture is considered to be higher;
- The surface on which is installed
Hardwood flooring is not recommended to be installed on a cement surface. Both types of flooring can be installed over older wooden surfaces, plywood etc.
